HOUSTON – The Architecture Center Houston (ArCH), the nonprofit arm of the American Institute of Architects Houston chapter, will host the 10th annual Gingerbread Build-Off competition on Saturday, December 8 from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. around the reflecting pool at City Hall’s Hermann Square. This free, family-friendly event presents an epic, edible battle among dozens of teams, using entirely consumable building materials, as they compete for the coveted Grand Prix de Show, plus a variety of additional category awards including Best Architectural Icon, Tallest Standing Structure, Best Traditionally (Holiday) Themed, Best Houston-centric Themed, Most Creative Interpretation of Materials, and Public Favorite. See 2017 winners.

“We are very excited to be hosting this fun competition for the 10th year,” said Rusty Bienvenue, Executive Director, AIA Houston. “The Gingerbread Build-Off has grown to one of the biggest Houston holiday events for families, architects and architecture fans alike and it’s always nice to see the mini gingerbread creations in the “Kid’s Construction Zone.”

This festive holiday event is expected to bring more than 4,500 spectators to cheer on teams and enjoy food trucks, hot chocolate, caroling and photo opportunities with Santa.

In addition to an independent judging panel of architecture and design professionals, four celebrity judges will round out the judging roster. Houston Life Co-Host Courtney Zavala, Houston Chronicle Senior Editor Lisa Gray, fashion designer and visual artist Selven O’Keef Jarmon, and co-owner of Three Brothers Bakery, Robert “Bobby” Jucker will join Steve Stelzer, AIA, City of Houston, Green Building Resource Center and Caryn Ogier, AIA, President of ArCH.

This year’s Gingerbread Build-Off is generously underwritten by Custom Audio Video (CAV) with additional support from Greystar, Thomas Printworks, Three Brothers Bakery and more.
