ACC Softball Launches Community Program

Wednesday, October 31, 2018

While the Alvin Community College softball players join the team to further their career, a new program is providing them with an opportunity to connect with young players.

ACC coach Jerri-Torres Farmer launched the Softball Sisters program that included a series of camps where the Lady Dolphins shared their skills. More than 200 local students attended the camps which were held in Alvin, Pearland and Santa Fe.

“I really enjoyed working and getting to know the kids in the community,” said pitcher Nunushka Kellog. “At the end of each camp I felt a sense of pride for my school and look forward to seeing them at our upcoming games.”

During the camps ACC players taught their younger counterparts drills to improve their agility, fielding along with other workouts. The young players who attended the camps will be invited to three ACC games in the spring to be recognized on the field and will be allowed to run the bases afterwards.

“Coach Farmer has been involved with the local youth softball leagues for many years and I think these camps help us extend that relationship,” ACC Athletics director Bill Lewis said. “It’s a very positive and rewarding experience to have those young players here on campus both for the camps and during our regular season.”

While Softball Sisters provides great mentoring benefits for the young students, it is also beneficial to the players who want to continue their career in the game, Farmer said.

“I want them to serve as a good role model for these students,” Farmer said. “Many of my players want to pursue coaching after they are done playing.”

Farmer said she hopes to continue this program in the future.

“I want to keep the community involved,” she said.
