Suspect Rams Police Car Following Pursuit
News Release
Tuesday, November 06, 2018

On Monday, November 5th  at approximately 10:05pm Galveston Police responded to a report of family violence in the 5600 block of Ave S.  While speaking with the victim, officers learned that a male subject, identified as 27-year-old Jonathan Galvan, had assaulted his girlfriend and threatened her with a firearm before leaving the residence with the gun in her vehicle, a white Ford Edge.

As officers were leaving the scene, they observed the suspect in the Ford Edge near the residence, and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.  The suspect immediately began to evade, leading officers on a chase off of the island.  He continued northbound on IH 45 and then exited at FM 519 where he U-turned under the overpass and got back onto IH-45 southbound.  Shortly after entering the freeway he made another U-turn, this time in the main lanes of the freeway and began proceeding northbound in the southbound lanes of IH45.  Officers followed while remaining on the shoulder of the freeway until the suspect abruptly stopped in the far-right lane near FM 1765.  Galvan then put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated rapidly before striking the front of one of the officers’ unit causing significant damage.  Officers then took the suspect into custody without incident.

The officer involved in the crash was treated by Galveston EMS at the scene for minor abrasions and bruises and was released.  Jonathan Galvan has been arrested and charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury – Family Violence, Evading Arrest and Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer.  His bonds total $257,500.
