Higher Education
Lone Star College announce audit results
News Release
Friday, November 23, 2018

HOUSTON (Nov. 21, 2018) – As a result of a Department of Education (DOE) program review of financial aid awards from 2012 through 2016, the DOE determined that Lone Star College awarded about $13,800,000 in Pell, Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants, and federal loans to otherwise ineligible students.

The DOE found the college made awards to students from ineligible high schools and did not prevent students who had not met satisfactory academic progress under the applicable regulations from receiving aid. The sum incorrectly awarded was approximately 2 percent of the nearly $663,000,000 awarded during that time period.

The college is still reviewing its options moving forward. According to Chancellor Stephen C. Head, the college has fully cooperated with the Department of Education since the issues were first raised. Chancellor Head has initiated a full audit of all financial aid practices with the help of outside specialists.
"I'm obviously disappointed in the findings. We take great pride in our business practices and our obligations to the community ,” said Head. We take full responsibility for implementing the appropriate actions to ensure we adhere to best practices moving forward."

Lone Star College offers high-quality, low-cost academic transfer and career training education to 99,000 students each semester. LSC is training tomorrow’s workforce today and redefining the community college experience to support student success. Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., serves as chancellor of LSC, the largest institution of higher education in the Houston area with an annual economic impact of nearly $3 billion. LSC consists of six colleges, eight centers, two university centers, Lone Star Corporate College and LSC-Online. To learn more, visit
