The officer who discharged his duty weapon, J. Seay, a 12-year veteran, was not injured.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant M. Ynosencio and Detectives E. Contreras, R. Gonzalez, M. Glover and D. Hobson reported:

The HPD SWAT team assisted the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in an operation at a building at the above address.  While SWAT officers were attempting to effect an arrest, a suspect fired a handgun at least two times at the SWAT officers.  One of the SWAT officers defended himself and the other officers on the scene by returning fire with his carbine duty weapon, striking the suspect.  Paramedics pronounced the suspect deceased at the scene.

A second suspect, 28, fled the scene in a vehicle and crashed nearby in the 100 block of East Navigation.  That suspect then fled on foot and was apprehended with the help of an HPD K-9 officer.  The suspect was transported back to the original scene where he then became unresponsive.  HFD personnel immediately treated him on scene and then transported him to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  The male's cause of death and identification are pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The seven other male suspects were taken into custody without further incident.

As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by HPD's Special Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs Division, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
