Coastal Barrier Project (Ike Dike) Meeting to be held on December 18 at Bay Area Community Center for Public Comment
News Release
Wednesday, December 05, 2018

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host a public meeting to discuss the Coastal Barrier Project on Tuesday, December 18, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Bay Area Community Center in Clear Lake Park located at 5002 E. NASA Parkway, Seabrook, Texas, 77586. This meeting is open to the public and Seabrook residents are encouraged to attend.

The coastal spine project, commonly referred to as the Ike Dike, first proposed by Texas A&M University at Galveston, is similar to the barrier in the Netherlands that has successfully prevented devastation during the 26 times it has been used. The coastal spine would feature sand-covered dunes with seagrass and would extend from the existing seawall to create a barrier against storm surges during major storms and hurricanes extending protection to the entire Houston-Galveston region. Texas A&M Galveston says the idea is simple “you stop the surge at the coast, you don’t let it get into the inland waters.”

Coastal Texas Study is intended to determine the feasibility of constructing coastal storm risk management and ecosystem restoration projects such as the one proposed by Texas A&M at Galveston, in addition to alternatives (see Figures 4-25 and 4-27 below) that can be used as a defense strategy along the Texas coast. The most current draft version of the study is available from the city’s website at A final study is to be released in 2021 before sending it to Congress for funding.
