The Temporary Lowering of Lake Houston has Begun
News Release
Thursday, December 06, 2018

Houston - Council Member Dave Martin would like to make residents aware that Houston Public Works initiated the temporary lowering of Lake Houston last night at approximately 11:15 p.m., in advance of the substantial rainfall predicted for tomorrow Friday, December 7, and Saturday, December 8. Since the amount of rain predicted exceeds 3 inches, the lake will continue to be lowered past the usual 41.5 feet until a elevation of 40.5 feet is reached.

Property owners were given notice Tuesday evening to secure property along the shoreline for a potential temporary lowering of Lake Houston. The current level of Lake Houston is 41.61 feet and continues to be lowered at a cautious rate as to not impact those living downstream. The lowering of the Lake from a normal pool elevation of 42.5 feet to 40.5 feet will total a reduction in the level of the lake by two feet.

Should additional lowering be necessary, Council Member Martin will work with Houston Public Works to make sure that everything possible is done to secure life and property in the Lake Houston area. Please monitor Council Member Martin's Facebook and Twitter for updates from the District E office. Additionally, residents may monitor the lowering of Lake Houston by visiting the Coastal Water Authority website.

For more information, please contact Council Member Martin's office at (832) 393-3008 or via email at
