GEDP Maritime Task ForceThe Galveston Economic Development Partnership’s Maritime Task Force met on Thursday to discuss the recently completed Coastal Texas Study prepared by the US Army Corps of Engineers. At the center of the meeting were the comments and suggestions by Dr. Bill Merrell, who initiated the coastal barrier concept after Hurricane Ike devastated the Upper Texas Coast in 2008.

Keith Palmer, Chair of the GEDP Maritime Task Force stated after the meeting:

“Dr. Bill Merrell provided a great overview of the Corps's recently completed Coastal Texas Study, along with his recommendations for improvements to the coastal spine component.  We are appreciative of the Corps's leadership with this project and have encouraged GEDP members to actively participate in the upcoming public hearings.  The Maritime Task Force agreed to be a proponent of a number of Dr. Merrell's recommendations, to include plan modifications at San Luis Pass, the Ring Levee, barrier construction and placement among others.”
