ACC Across the Curriculum Conference
News Release
Wednesday, January 02, 2019

Alvin Community College will host a conference to provide local educators with an opportunity to share their methods in the classroom while also learning about how to make improvements.

The third annual Across the Curriculum Conference will be held at the Science/Health Science Building on February 8 on the ACC campus. The theme is Cultivating Student Learning.

Organizers are seeking proposals for presentations at the conference. Some of the presenters will include faculty, administrators, tutors, student mentors to share their best practices for research, student success and challenges.

“We have presenters from across various fields of study,” said Keith Vyvial, ACC English instructor and event organizer. “Topics will include active engagement, technology, linked courses, career indecision, and teaching reluctant learners.”

The Across the Curriculum is supported, in part, from an Innovative Initiative Grant from the ACC Foundation.

Some of the topics that will also be covered include student support services and innovative teaching methods.

“We are reaching out to more presenters from other area colleges as well as local ISDs from a variety of fields of study,” Vyvial said. “This year, we are placing greater emphasis on STEM fields.”

The keynote speaker for the event will be Becky Kamas with NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement.  The division aims to improve STEM education by actively promote human space exploration among teachers and students.

The conference is free and is open to any higher education faculty as well as high school staff teaching dual credit.

Educators can also earn Continuing Professional Education credits for attendance. ACC is a provider of CPE to Texas educators for certificate renewal purposes.

The deadline to submit a proposal for presentation is January 4. Deadline to register for the conference is February 1.
