Texas Association of School Boards Encourages Texans to Honor Trustees

Austin —Texas school board members volunteer countless hours to ensure students have the best schools possible. To honor the more than 7,200 locally elected trustees in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has declared January School Board Recognition Month, and the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) is encouraging all Texas communities to join the celebration by showing appreciation to these men and women.

“In every part of the state, dedicated school board members willingly step forward to tackle serious issues and deal with tough financial challenges to provide excellent educational experiences for all children—and the trustees work with no pay, giving their best as a generous gift to the next generation,” said James B. Crow, TASB executive director. “We urge every community to express support for their local board members during the first month of the new year.”

School districts across Texas will be honoring their local school board members with celebrations, student-written thank-you notes, and certificates of appreciation. The community can join in by saying thank you to their local school board members and by sharing appreciation using #SchoolBoardMonth on Twitter and Instagram.

“School boards play a vital role in our efforts to improve education in the Lone Star State as they work with parents, education professionals, and community members to create successful learning environments,” said Abbott in his proclamation.

TASB is a nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school boards. School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state. The districts they represent serve more than 5.3 million public school students. To learn more about January’s School Board Recognition Month, visit
