Incoming District Clerk Marilyn Burgess to Introduce an Era of Fiscal Responsibility, Integrity, and Diversity
News Release
Friday, January 04, 2019

Houston – On Tuesday, January 1, 2019, Marilyn Burgess took the Oath of Office, becoming the new Harris County District Clerk. Ms. Burgess brings decades of executive-level experience as a Certified Public Accountant. She enters office poised to introduce an era of fiscal responsibility, integrity, and diversity.

“With a budget of $35 million and around 600 employees, the District Clerk’s Office requires strong administrative and financial leadership,” Ms. Burgess emphasized. “I vow to reprioritize the office’s budget in order to pay our clerks a fair wage and emphasize new technologies that will save our tax-payers money and our jurors time.”

In her role as District Clerk, Ms. Burgess serves as the custodian of the “official record of the district courts,” recording the actions and the judgments of the court, and transmitting the orders of the court to the authorities responsible for their execution.

The District Clerk also manages all aspects of the juror summons process. In that capacity, Ms. Burgess says, “I will create effective outreach efforts to ensure our juries reflect the wonderful diversity of Harris County. I am honored to serve all the county’s residents and look forward to meeting many of you in the community and during jury service.”
