Bronze Anchor Award bestowed at Maritime Gala in May

The Board of Directors of the Houston International Seafarers’ Center (HISC) proudly announces that Captain Richard H. Russell, Head of Crude Operations, Atlantic for AET, has been selected as the recipient of the 2019 "Bronze Anchor Award." The “Bronze Anchor Award” recognizes an individual, company or organization that has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to promoting the HISC mission and vision, and served as a leader and advocate for the welfare of seafarers.

Captain Russell will be officially honored as a “Bronze Anchor Award” recipient at the HISC Maritime Gala to be held May 4, 2019 at the Houston Marriott South at Hobby Airport in Houston, TX.

Captain Russell has a well-deserved reputation of serving the maritime community and promoting seafarer well-being. As President and long-term member of the HISC Board, Captain Russell championed and promoted voluntary port levies, which allow the Center to faithfully deliver the support services today’s seafarers need during their limited time in port. His insights and recommendations were critical to the success of the Centers’ continuing transition to more efficiently and more humanely address mariner social and spiritual needs. In his many leadership roles, including President of the Board of Directors, Chamber of Shipping Americas, and board member of West Gulf Maritime Association and Marine Preservations Association, Captain Russell is a dedicated and selfless advocate for mariner welfare and safety. Further, Captain Russel is also an active member of the Southeast Texas Waterway Advisory Council, Lonestar Harbor Safety Committee, and South Texas Waterway Advisory Committee, as well as the INTERTANKO North American Panel.

“I am truly honored and humbled to be selected as the recipient of the 2019 Bronze Anchor Award,” Captain Russell said. “As a mariner, I know firsthand just how valuable a service the Seafarer Centers around the world provide to those individuals that make their living on the sea. I’m proud to help the Seafarer Center and proud of the support my company AET provides as well.”

The HISC Maritime Gala is the primary fundraiser for the Houston International Seafarers Center, and has been generously supported in past years by individuals and companies that believe in the Center’s outreach mission to seafarers visiting the Port of Houston from all corners of the world.

The Maritime Gala’s theme, "Kentucky Derby" will lend itself well to a festive and elegant evening for maritime and maritime related professional from around the Port of Houston region.

About the Houston International Seafarers Centers

The Houston International Seafarers’ Center is a “home away from home” for seafarers visiting the Port of Houston. Chartered in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s as a non-profit organization, the center has served millions of visiting seafarers. The center exists as the result of a deep desire and concern within the local maritime industry, followed by active support and involvement of the community and local churches, to provide a safe and welcoming recreational and spiritual environment on land for those who have chosen the mariner profession.
