News Release
Friday, January 11, 2019

College of the Mainland Art Gallery will host photographer Valeria Yaklin-Brown and her exhibit of “Geography Lessons: Midpoints and Fault Lines” from Jan. 24 through Feb 20.

The exhibit is based on photographs taken on film by Yaklin-Brown and often from the passenger seat or sun roof of her car. The physical flaws on the prints such as dust, light leaks, stains were inspired by the art of kintsugi in which broken ceramics are repaired with gold. Kintsugi philosophy recognizes brokenness as an opportunity for restoration resulting in greater strength and beauty.

Yaklin-Brown, who earned a bachelor of fine arts and masters in student art with an emphasis on photography from Lamar University, had set to take photos by taking solo driving trips to nowhere in particular.

Her initial plan did not materialize and she instead always had a location and timeline to meet. The trips, however, did result in her original project concept of personal reflection, celebration, mending, and finding significance in imperfection.

An artist talk is scheduled for Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. in the COM Art Gallery. The photo exhibit is free and open to the public.
