ACC Respiratory Care Director Named Site Visitor of Year
Press Release
Friday, January 11, 2019

ACCOne vital component of accreditation reaffirmation is a site visit by officials from other colleges.

Alvin Community College Respiratory Care Director Marby McKinney was recently named site visitor of the year by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).

“I was so surprised,” she said of her honor. “I do site visits because it helps me grow professionally. I didn’t expect to be recognized.”

Accreditation is an important achievement for college programs because it ensures that they meet quality standards and that students are receiving a quality education from a specific program.

McKinney was recognized on December 4 at the CoARC Conference in Las Vegas where she gave a speech about her experiences.

She travels to a variety of different programs across the country. Site visit teams typically consist of two members either two respiratory therapists or a therapist and a physician.”

“The team members serve as the ‘eyes and ears’ of CoARC, meaning we seek, collect, verify, and interpret all information likely to demonstrate how the program meets the applicable standards,” she said. “This is done through interviews with key personnel, support staff, students, graduates, and the Advisory Committee. They also review and analyze relevant documentation and reports and inspect facilities.”

Site visits are an important aspect of accreditation because it reveals deficiencies that can be corrected.

“Programmatic accreditation is a valuable and necessary component of respiratory care education. It ensures that best practices are adhered to and protects the students interest,” McKinney said.

Site visits also provide participants with valuable insight into their own programs.

“I appreciate getting to be exposed to best practices and to serve my profession,” McKinney said in her speech at the conference. “I truly value my role as a site visitor because I get as much as I give from the experience.”
