The Houston Independent School District Board of Education on Thursday elected new officers for the board for 2019.

Diana Davila was named president of the board, taking over from Rhonda Skillern-jones. Holly Maria Flynn Vilaseca was named first vice president, Elizabeth Santos as second vice president, Sergio Lira remained secretary and Sue Deigaard as assistant secretary. News Release

The city council voted 7-0, with Davila having left the meeting and Lira away from the table, to indefinitely postpone action regarding hosting Lone Star Governance Training for the community.

The board voted 8-0 to approve an amended motion regarding the selection of a coach to assist with Lone Star Governance and related governance and team-building matters.

The motion was amended to state that the board identify and consider specific individuals to serve as the board's coach and assist the board in governance and team-building matters, and to make a selection by the board's February regular meeting.

The board voted 8-0, with Davila away, to postpone action regarding the board's quarter self-evaluations, staff use tracker, time use tracker, and quarterly progress tracker in accordance with the Texas Education Agency implementation integrity instrument.

The board voted 5-3, with Wanda Adams, Skillern-Jones and Jolanda Jones opposed, and Davila not present, to approve an addendum to the superintendent search contract with HYA for additional community engagement.

The board voted 7-0-1, with Lira abstaining and Davila not present, to approve an increase in the contract with TEA-approved professional providers for support of improvement required, former improvement required, and comprehensive schools during the 2018-2019 school year.

The board voted 7-0-1, with Jones abstaining and Davila absent, to approve the balance of the personnel agenda, including proposed termination of term, continuing and probationary contracts, excluding the contract of Reed Richards, as discussed in closed session.

The board voted 6-0-2, with Jones and Santos abstaining and Davila absent, to approve a motion to enter into a final order to terminate the term contract of Reed Richards as discussed in closed session.

The board voted 6-0-2, with Adams and Jones abstaining and Davila absent, to find no good cause existed for educators to abandon their contracts and to submit a written complaint to impose sanctions as discussed in closed session.

The board voted 6-0-2, with Adams and Jones abstaining, and Davila absent, to authorize the filing of an appeal in the matter of Houston ISD vs. Chester Nichols, as discussed in closed session.

The board voted 6-0-2, with Adams and Jones abstaining, and Davila absent, to approve settlement of the subrogation lien of Prentice Robinson against Maria Marroquin and Allstate Insurance as discussed in closed session.

The board voted 7-0-1, with Jones abstaining and Davila absent, to approve the sale of surplus property at 5650 Selinksy Road as discussed in closed session.
The board voted 7-0-1, with Jones abstaining and Davila absent, to approve the sale of surplus property at 5426 Cavalcade Street as discussed in closed session.

No other action was taken on items discussed in closed session.

All other items were approved by unanimous vote with Davila absent. All members were present at the meeting, with Davila leaving prior to action on several items. Agenda
