Galveston advised to expect Strand crosswalk project to begin Monday, change traffic direction
Press Release
Tuesday, January 22, 2019

GALVESTON, TX – Beginning next Monday, and ahead of schedule, traffic and parking on The Strand will be limited to eastbound one-way while crews continue working on the crosswalk project.

Work began earlier this month on a project to further beautify and improve the walkability of Galveston’s historic Strand district by rehabilitating the paving bricks at intersections along the street.

The first phase of the work involved closing the southern half of each of the four intersections.  The project is moving ahead of schedule and crews have nearly finished phase one of the project.

For now, traffic is still directed westbound. The second phase of the project will begin next Monday, Jan. 28. During the second phase, traffic and parking will be directed eastbound because the south side of the road will be open and the north side closed. This means traffic should only be driving in the direction toward the East End.

Please use Harborside or Mechanic to detour around the construction zones.  No businesses will be closed due to this construction. Galveston City Council in October hired the construction firm for the project. The $400,000 project is being paid for with money from the 2017 voter-approved bond election.
