National Drug and Alcohol Facts WeekNational Drug and Alcohol Facts Week is January 22-27, 2019. An interactive Health and Safety Fair event was held January 23 at the Nessler Civic Center in Texas City.

Students from area high schools participated in hands-on, interactive, educational exhibits, which are designed to be fun yet meant to dispel the myths around substance abuse. Texas City Police Chief Joe Stanton welcomed everyone to the event. The students were then quizzed regarding alcohol and drugs. The student's were provided remotes whereby they could record their answers. The students' responses were then shown to the students on a screen and the correct answers were provided.

The students then went to different stations where they had an interactive safety lab, an impaired driving simulator, and virtual reality driving goggles.

National Drug and Alcohol Facts WeekTexas Department of Public Safety Officers and Galveston County Sheriff's Officers interacted with the students by having them walk a line as persons who are tested for sobriety. They were tested while wearingh goggles that made them see things as if they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The students laughed as they realized they were not able to perform the simple tasks.

District Attorney Jack Roady was present and spoke with attendees.

Two students from Upward Hope Academy in Galveston shared some of their thoughts of the day's experiences.. Listen:  (1:49)
