ACC Polysomnography Program Receives Accreditation Reaffirmation
News Release
Friday, January 25, 2019

Accreditation is an important component to a college technical program because it ensures that students are receiving a quality education that prepares them for the workforce.

Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) recently reaffirmed the accreditation for the Alvin Community College Polysomnography program.

Polysomnography is the study of sleep disorders and graduates from the ACC program will help with the treatment and diagnosis the causes of conditions like narcolepsy, sleep apnea and insomnia.

ACC was reaffirmed due to its “commitment to continuous quality improvement in education,” CAAHEP President Dr. Gregory Ferenchak wrote in a letter to the college.

Polysomongraphy director Georgette Goodwill said the reaffirmation is an indication that ACC has a reputable program.

“This is a great honor for our program,” she said. “There is a lot effort from  the entire program to maintain the high standards and expectations from our students.”

The national accreditation is valid for 10 years. The Polysomnography program was first accredited in 2009.

“Graduating from a CAAHEP-accredited program is a pathway for our graduates to take the international Board of Registered Polysomnography Technologist exam,” Goodwill said.

Polysomnography graduates recently posted a 100 percent pass rate for their licensure exam.

The accreditation reaffirmation process includes a thorough review of the program in addition to a site visit from CAAHEP representatives. The review yielded no citations for the program, Goodwill said.

CAAHEP will monitor the program’s compliance through an annual report as well as other documentation. As ACC continues to maintain accreditation standards, the next site visit will be in 2028.

ACC is one of 16 colleges throughout the country and one of two in Texas with an accredited Polysomnography degree program.
