Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership Hosts Its Annual Quasar Awards Banquet, Honoring Land Commissioner George P. Bush

BAHEP Quasar Awards Honors George P. BushThe Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership held its 26th Annual Quasar Award Banquet on January 25, honoring Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush with the 2019 Quasar Award for his support of BAHEP’s efforts to make the coastal barrier system, first conceived of by Dr. William Merrell, a reality for the region.

BAHEP President Bob Mitchell opened the program by welcoming elected officials and expressing BAHEP’s appreciation to Commissioner Bush for joining the celebration.  Mitchell gave a re-cap of the challenges and triumphs BAHEP experienced in the past year, praising the leadership of Dr. Brenda Hellyer, Chancellor, San Jacinto College District ,and thanking BAHEP members for their cooperation and hard work. Mitchell also stressed the honor of working with Dr. Bill Merrell of Texas A&M Galveston, referring to him as the father of the original version of the “Ike Dike”. Listen: (7:05)

BAHEP Annual BanquetOutgoing chair Dr. Hellyer spoke of the organization’s scope of work in 2018, introduced Commissioner Bush and invited him to come up to receive the award and offer comments. Listen: (13:42)

Commissioner Bush extended his thanks and gave credit to the General Land Office staff for their tireless work to protect and manage the Texas coast. Bush thanked the elected officials at every level of government for working in one accord to bring the coastal spine concept to this critical stage and stressed his ongoing support of their efforts, ”I thank you for acknowledging our work through this award. We look forward to continuing that work, but we will always be vigilant as it relates to coastal issues; we will remain your guardian for the coast.” The commissioner also offered high praise for Mitchell’s advocacy on behalf of the region. BAHEP’s 2019 Chair, Todd Caliva, CEO Clear Lake Regional Medical Center closed the program by reinforcing the strategy for the year ahead. “Let’s look at the goals as stated in BAHEP’s 2018 annual report;:1) long-term efforts that strengthen the region, 2) education and workforce development, 3) the 86th Texas Legislative agenda, and 4) serving as trusted advisor and facilitator in storm surge protection.”  Listen: (9:23)

The event was held at South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center in League City.
